Volunteer Firemen’s Insurance Services, Inc., better known as VFIS, recently activated a new one-stop-shop online resource for fire departments - ResponderHelp. You can access the website at www.responderhelp.org.
Free of charge, VFIS has consolidated a vast library of resources, ranging from sample standard operating guidelines (SOGs), technical bulletins by industry experts, checklists, informational flyers, and articles/research papers on a variety of fire service topics. Categories include:
• Community Risk Reduction
• Emergency Medical Services
• Fire Rescue Operations
• Human Resources
• Organization and Administration
• Safe Vehicle Operations
• Safety and Health
Our favorite resource on ResponderHelp are the sample SOGs, which can be downloaded for free, without logging in or creating an account. You just click the “Download Document” button and you’ve got a draft document to work off of. SOGs range from Social Media to Intersection Practices While Driving to Aerial Device Maintenance & Inspection. These are far from perfect and definitely need to be customized to your organization, but they are a decent starting point. It’s almost always easier to edit something than create from scratch.
